The Masked Writer: Persona Poetry as Modern Midrash
Wed Feb 16, 2022 12:00 PM - Wed Mar 2, 2022 1:30 PM EST
Online, Zoom
Description
Wednesdays, February 16, 23, March 2 @ 12–1:30 p.m. EST
$108 for 3 sessions
Join feminist Torah scholar and creative writing professor Sivan Rotholz for a midrash masquerade. In this three-part series, we will take a deep dive into biblical stories and the questions they give rise to, exploring how donning the veil of persona poetry (writing in the voice of characters) can breathe new life into ancient texts. Part text study, part craft workshop, part generative creative writing space, each week we will encounter persona poetry that invites us to reconsider biblical characters before turning to in-class writing prompts and adding our own voices to an age-old tradition. No previous biblical knowledge or creative writing experience necessary.
All sessions will be recorded and sent to participants. We encourage live attendance for you to get the most out of the experience.
Sivan Rotholz is a professor of gynocentric Torah and creative writing. She has taught at Brooklyn College, Tel Aviv University, Columbia/Barnard Hillel, Moishe House, and elsewhere, and has shared her Torah in synagogues and living rooms across the globe. Her writing has appeared in the Jewish Journal, 929, and Ritualwell, among other publications. She is the Education Director for Achayot – Jewish Women Writers, and is pursuing rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion.
