Black Fire / White Fire: Reading & Writing Creative Midrash
Wed Feb 2, 2022 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM EST
Online, Zoom
Description
This event is free and open to all. Please consider making a donation to support our free programs and events from Ritualwell.
Join feminist Torah scholar and creative writing professor Sivan Rotholz for an exploration of midrash, from the ancient rabbinic to the modern creative. Our sages taught that the Bible was written in black fire on white fire – the black fire is the words on the page, the white fire the empty space between that gives rise to a world of possibility. From this blank canvas, midrash is born. In this session we will discover what midrash is and learn how to write our own. No previous text study or creative writing experience necessary.
Sivan Rotholz is a professor of gynocentric Torah and creative writing. She has taught at Brooklyn College, Tel Aviv University, Columbia/Barnard Hillel, Moishe House, and elsewhere, and has shared her Torah in synagogues and living rooms across the globe. Her writing has appeared in the Jewish Journal, 929, and Ritualwell, among other publications. She is the Education Director for Achayot – Jewish Women Writers, and is pursuing rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion.
