In Silence and Resistance: Memoir of a Girlhood in Haiti, acclaimed activist and journalist Monique Clesca traces a childhood shaped by fear under the Duvalier dictatorship — friends and family disappearing, parents absent, violence inside the home as well as outside it. After Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, long-buried family truths surface: gambling and financial ruin, domestic violence, child sexual assault, and a sibling hidden in plain sight. Breaking her silence, Clesca finds her way toward acceptance, forgiveness, and freedom.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, join us for a candid conversation about survival, healing, and the courage it takes to speak.
