Musical Improv 201

Mondays, April 20 – June 15 (no class May 4) | 6:00–8:00pm

Take the next step in your musical improv journey and start building the skills needed to create an improvised musical.

This course focuses on transforming scenes into songs and developing longer narrative arcs. You’ll learn how to heighten emotional moments, recognize when a song should begin, and support ensemble storytelling through music.

You’ll work on:

• Seamless transitions from dialogue into song
• Identifying the emotional “why” of a musical moment
• Musical patterns that support story structure
• Ensemble storytelling and recurring themes
• Foundations of improvised musical formats

Ideal for students who have completed Musical Improv 101 or have equivalent experience.

About your teacher:

Naomi Murden is an improviser, actor, and educator with extensive training from Upright Citizens Brigade and Second City Hollywood, where she studied improv, sketch, and advanced musical improv on scholarship. She has performed on renowned stages including UCB, iO West, Second City, Impro Theatre, and at festivals such as High Desert Fringe (Best Comedy Group winner).

Naomi specializes in musical improv, character-driven work, and collaborative ensemble play. Her teaching style blends strong foundational technique with joy, playfulness, and emotional safety, empowering students to take risks, trust their instincts, and connect authentically with scene partners. With classical vocal training and years of performance experience, she brings confidence and clarity to teaching musical improv for all levels.

In addition to her comedy background, Naomi has a BA in Theatre, professional experience in theatre management and programming, and a deep love of working with both adults and young performers. She is known for creating inclusive, warm, and supportive classrooms where students feel seen, encouraged, and brave enough to fail spectacularly.

Now based in Nottingham, Naomi continues to teach, perform, and build joyful improv communities that center kindness, curiosity, and fun.
