The Paxton/Spangler Band

The Paxton/Spangler Band is a Detroit-rooted quintet led by T-Bone Paxton and RJ Spangler. Longtime musical partners, the two are veterans of the city’s jazz, blues, and soul scene, with a collaboration that stretches back to their years with the Sun Messengers. Their sound draws together New Orleans groove, soulful jazz, boogaloo, and Afro-Cuban influence, anchored by Paxton’s trombone and vocals and Spangler’s deep rhythmic feel. The group has built a strong following through frequent performances around Detroit and throughout the Midwest, bringing a seasoned, danceable energy that feels both classic and unmistakably local.

Featured on their recent release Trick Bag, the ensemble pairs veteran leadership with a stellar supporting cast of younger Detroit musicians, creating a vibrant, intergenerational sound full of warmth, momentum, and style.
