Talk and Dine with Mazeppa

The Romanoff Foundation is pleased to collaborate with Grange Park Opera to bring you the fascinating history of Mazeppa.  In June / July GPO stages Tchaikovsky’s opera, directed by Sir David Pountney.  Conductor Martyn Brabbins conducts the orchestra of English National Opera in this rich multi-layered score.

We are honoured to be enlightened by Mr. Alexander Kotchoubey. a direct descendent of some of the key personalities in the opera.  Apart from Alexander Kotchoubey's thirty year career in finance, he has recently completed the annotated translation of his great grandfather’s memoirs about Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. He descends directly from the General Judge Vassyl Kotchoubey a major character in the opera, Mazeppa. His grandfather was a noted opera singer in the mid 20th century and music, the arts and family have been a cornerstone of Alex’s upbringing. He is an Honorary Trustee of the Irkutsk Decembrist Museum and has worked closely with a major museum in Nice, attributing an unknown portrait to the first husband of Princess Elena Wolkonskaya, a great grandmother. Alex has worked with the Movie Director of Bitter Harvest, George Mendeluk on a TV series version of the story of Mazeppa and on in another sphere he has worked with the current Presidential administration of Ukraine on adopting Direct Democracy principles. He was a Board member of the Ukraine Institute of Direct Democracy. Alex is passionate about Russian history and politics and he lives with his family in Geneva, Switzerland.
