Greeting Shibari

Ki • Presence • First Contact Through Rope

Every rope session begins long before the first knot.

Aisatsu Nawa—Greeting Shibari—is the art of meeting and connecting through rope.

This four-hour workshop is dedicated to the opening moment of a rope scene: the greeting, the alignment and the tuning of Ki, breath and intention between the Bakushi—the person tying—and the Ukete—the person receiving rope.

We explore how rope can become a ritual of arrival and support the journey towards Shibari subspace: a way of communicating:

“I see you. I am here.”

WHAT IS AISATSU NAWA?

Aisatsu means “greeting.”

In rope, it describes the moment when connection is established emotionally, physically and energetically.

Aisatsu Nawa is rooted in presence and listening.

Through intentional rope placement, touch, breath and pacing, the Bakushi begins shaping the atmosphere of the scene, while the Ukete is invited into trust, receptivity and embodied awareness.

WHAT WE WILL EXPLORE

1. KI AND INTENTION

  • Understanding Ki as attention, direction and emotional tone
  • Exploring how attention travels through hands, rope, body and space
  • Establishing clear consent, shared intention and connection
  • Remaining attentive to verbal and non-verbal responses

2. AISATSU NAWA — FRONT CROSS

  • Creating a welcoming, open-facing greeting
  • Establishing safety, grounding and orientation
  • Developing rhythm and emotional pacing

3. AISATSU NAWA — HISHI GOTE VERSION

  • Greeting through containment and surrender
  • Transitioning from openness towards inward focus
  • Exploring breath-led tension and release

4. AISATSU NAWA — STRAPPADO-INSPIRED VERSION

  • Creating a deeper and more charged greeting
  • Using elevation and angle to influence physical and emotional experience
  • Maintaining safety, communication and clarity during higher-intensity openings

5. TRANSITION AND INTEGRATION

  • Moving from the greeting into the wider rope scene
  • Reading and responding to the Ukete
  • Recognising when to remain soft, deepen the experience, pause or stop
  • Maintaining connection as the scene evolves

PRACTICAL FOCUS

This workshop balances theory, demonstration and guided practice, with time to repeat, experience and refine each element.

You will work with:

  • Rope placement with emotional clarity
  • Listening through hands, body and rope
  • Establishing trust through presence and communication
  • Responding to breath, posture, movement and changes in emotional state

✨ WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

This workshop is suitable for:

  • Bakushi and Ukete with basic rope experience
  • People curious about ritual, presence and emotional depth
  • Practitioners who want to slow down and deepen connection
  • Anyone interested in Kinbaku as communication rather than technique alone

Participants should already understand basic consent and safer rope practice and be comfortable using a single-column tie or have equivalent foundational experience.

🧵 WHAT TO BRING

  • One rope of approximately 8–10 metres
  • Safety shears or another suitable rope-cutting tool
  • Comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement
  • Openness, patience and attention
