GOTE SHIBARI MASTERCLASS

TK LAB /// 5-HOUR WORKSHOP

Ropejam Studio presents a new series of five-hour Masterclasses: intensive workshops created to explore one fundamental element of Kinbaku-Shibari in depth.

The Gote Shibari Masterclass is a deep exploration of the Takate Kote—or TK—from its historical origins and evolution to contemporary structures, variations and styles.

The TK is one of the signature ties of Kinbaku, but there is no single structure that can be applied identically to every body.

During this laboratory, we will bring together anatomy, mechanics, adaptation and creative construction to understand how a TK can be tailored to the individual partner.

We will pay particular attention to shoulder mobility, body positioning, rope placement, blood circulation and nerve pathways.

No TK can ever be considered completely safe. The focus of this Masterclass is therefore on developing greater anatomical awareness, informed decision-making and practical tools to help recognise and mitigate its inherent risks.

By understanding the function of each component, you will learn how to make conscious structural choices and begin creating a TK tailored to your partner, your intention and your personal tying style.

A short break will be included during the workshop.

PROGRAMME

HISTORY AND EVOLUTION

• The origins and evolution of Gote Shibari
• From traditional forms to contemporary TK structures
• Understanding different approaches, variations and styles

ANATOMY AND RISK AWARENESS

• Relevant blood vessels and circulation
• Nerve pathways and areas of increased vulnerability
• Shoulder rotation and individual range of movement
• Shoulder and arm positioning
• Recognising when a position needs to be adapted or abandoned

ENTERING AND POSITIONING THE TK

• Different ways of entering the TK
• Assessing the partner’s mobility before tying
• Rope positioning and tension
• Adapting rope placement to different bodies
• Kannuki placement and structural choices

ONE-WRAP AND TWO-WRAP STRUCTURES

• One-wrap Gote
• Two-wrap TK structures
• Stemmed and stemless construction
• Two variations for each structural approach
• Comparing function, stability, adaptability and aesthetics

THE THIRD ROPES

• Understanding the function of the third rope
• Structural analysis of different third-rope applications
• Tasuki structures and variations
• Twist and Shout
• Creating stability and directional pressure
• Pressure-point awareness
• Understanding how each choice changes the function, sensation and aesthetics of the TK

SUSPENSION-LINE PLACEMENTS

• Suspension-line placement options
• How line placement affects load, balance and body position
• Evaluating the TK structure before loading
• Adapting the placement to the intended suspension

TIGER NAWA RYŪ

Learning established patterns is useful for understanding how different TK structures function.

In Tiger Nawa Ryū, however, patterns are not treated as the final destination.

The central philosophy is structure before form: learning the anatomy, mechanics and intention behind the tie so that every choice has a purpose.

Rather than reproducing the same TK on every partner, the aim is to master transferable concepts that allow you to adapt, experiment and eventually develop your own TK style.
