SHIBARI KINBAKU ART
LEVEL 3 /// TIGER SEME NAWA
THE ART OF THE CHALLENGING ROPE
Romantic Seme Nawa /// Floor-Based Kinbaku
The Third Chapter of Tiger Nawa Ryū
Learn to deepen.
Aibu Nawa asks:
How can rope listen?
Seme Nawa asks:
What becomes possible when that listening continues inside pressure, challenge and pain?
Level 3 is a two-day immersion into Tiger Seme Nawa: rope shaped through authority, restriction, predicament, vulnerability and transformation.
Seme Nawa is sometimes reduced to harshness.
But intensity alone does not create Seme.
Challenge without attention is merely force.
Challenge with attention can become communication, ordeal, trust, surrender and change.
Tiger Seme Nawa explores what happens when two people knowingly journey together into more difficult emotional and physical territory.
Pain is not disguised or removed from the practice.
It becomes one possible language within it.
The rope may restrain, expose, compress, frustrate, challenge or overwhelm. It may create helplessness, resistance, anticipation, pleasure, fear, catharsis or surrender.
These experiences are not applied to the Ukete from a distance.
They are entered together.
This is the principle of:
Romantic Seme Nawa.
The Bakushi does not abandon the Ukete inside the challenge.
Both remain connected throughout the journey.
FROM LISTENING TO CHALLENGE
Level 2 develops sensitivity, presence and deep listening.
Level 3 asks what that sensitivity makes possible.
How can pressure be applied with clarity?
How can pain become communication rather than noise?
How can restriction alter the psychological experience of the body?
What happens when the Ukete resists?
When do we remain inside the challenge?
When do we deepen it?
When do we change direction?
When do we return?
Seme Nawa carries the shadow and aesthetics of torture: restraint, ordeal, exposure, predicament, helplessness and pain.
Within Tiger Nawa Ryū, these become consensual artistic and relational materials.
They are approached through negotiation, attention and responsibility—not through careless force or the pursuit of suffering for its own sake.
The aim is not simply to make rope harder.
The aim is to make intention clearer.

DAY 1 /// ENTERING THE CHALLENGE
Intention, Authority, Pressure and Pain
Saturday /// 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Day 1 introduces the foundations of Tiger Seme Nawa.
We begin by examining intention.
The same rope can comfort, contain, command or challenge.
What changes is not only the structure.
It is the quality transmitted through the hands, body, timing and attention of the Bakushi.
Students explore how authority can be communicated before greater intensity is introduced.
We investigate how pressure develops, how pain can be modulated and how the Bakushi can remain attentive without becoming hesitant or emotionally absent.
The Ukete is not treated as a passive object.
Their breath, posture, resistance, movement, emotion and choices continuously shape what happens next.
THE NATURE OF SEME
• Seme Nawa as challenge, pressure and transformation
• The difference between force and intentional intensity
• Romantic Seme and the principle of journeying together
• Pain as one possible language of rope
• Responsibility when entering difficult territory
AUTHORITY AND PRESENCE
• Giving direction without unnecessary aggression
• Confidence, decisiveness and emotional clarity
• Using proximity, posture and attention
• Maintaining connection while holding power
• Recognising hesitation, resistance and invitation
PRESSURE AND RESPONSE
• How intensity changes over time
• Reading breath, muscular tone, posture and emotional state
• Working with resistance rather than automatically suppressing it
• The relationship between challenge, endurance and relief
• Choosing whether to deepen, sustain, change or return
PAIN AND COMMUNICATION
• Negotiating pain without attempting to predict every response
• Recognising differences between desired challenge and unwanted distress
• Verbal and non-verbal communication during intensity
• Maintaining agency inside restrictive experiences
• Returning clearly when the body or relationship requires it
Day 1 is taught through original Tiger Nawa Ryū partnered studies.
The specific exercises, progressions and teaching methodology are experienced inside the course rather than published as a technical syllabus.
DAY 2 /// THE TRANSFORMING ROPE
Predicament, Exposure and Romantic Seme Nawa
Sunday /// 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Day 2 expands Seme Nawa into complete floor-based journeys.
We explore how posture, restriction, exposure and anticipation can transform the psychological experience of the Ukete.
The challenge may emerge through pain.
But it may also emerge through waiting, limitation, frustration, vulnerability, silence or the impossibility of finding an easy position.
Seme is not one sensation.
It is the intentional shaping of an ordeal.
Students begin composing longer journeys in which intensity rises, changes and returns without losing emotional continuity.
RESTRICTION AND HELPLESSNESS
• The emotional effect of reduced movement
• Creating vulnerability without abandoning communication
• Resistance, containment and surrender
• Allowing limitation to become part of the experience
• Understanding the difference between apparent and actual choice
PREDICAMENT
• Creating situations in which every available response has meaning
• The relationship between discomfort, decision and movement
• Allowing the Ukete to discover the challenge rather than explaining everything
• Reading how predicament changes over time
• Recognising when a predicament has completed its purpose
EXPOSURE AND TORTURE AESTHETICS
• The visual and psychological language of ordeal
• Shame, pride, vulnerability and display
• Using posture to alter emotional tone
• The difference between consensual torture aesthetics and uncontrolled harm
• Creating intensity that remains relational and artistically coherent
EMOTIONAL CONTINUITY
• Moving between tenderness and severity
• Allowing softness to intensify rather than weaken Seme
• Integrating voice, silence, touch and rope
• Remaining emotionally present throughout technical actions
• Understanding return as part of the journey
UNTYING AND RETURN
Intensity does not finish when the final rope is removed.
How the Bakushi reduces pressure, releases restriction and returns the Ukete to an unrestricted body can transform the meaning of the entire experience.
Untying is therefore approached as an essential part of Seme Nawa.
The return may be gentle, controlled, unresolved, intimate or quiet.
But it should never be accidental.
THE TIGER NAWA RYŪ METHOD
Learn the elements. Understand their function. Experiment. Discover. Create.
Tiger Nawa Ryū is not built around reproducing your teacher’s rope.
Its teaching is influenced by maieutics, the Socratic philosophical tradition in which the teacher does not simply provide answers but helps create the conditions through which understanding can emerge.
We learn through questions, observation, experimentation and discovery.
Instead of only asking:
How do I reproduce this tie?
We begin asking:
Why does it work?
What is this element doing?
What happens if I change it?
What is the body communicating?
What can I create from the principles I understand?
The deeper you progress through Tiger Nawa Ryū, the more important these questions become.
The goal is not to reproduce Lola’s rope.
The goal is to develop the understanding from which your own rope can emerge.
The public description introduces the territory of Tiger Seme Nawa.
Its original exercises, progressions, teaching sequences and adaptation methods are experienced inside the programme.

YOUR SENSEI
LOLA TIGER NAWA
Lola Tiger Nawa is the founder of Ropejam Studio and creator of Tiger Nawa Ryū.
Lola’s relationship with rope began through competitive sailing in childhood, long before rope became an artistic, relational and philosophical practice.
More than twenty years of dedicated Kinbaku practice have since brought together creative self-exploration with the study of Japanese rope disciplines.
Lola’s practice draws from Ippon Nawa, Aibu Nawa and Seme Nawa, with studies including internationally recognised teachers Osada Steve, Yagami Ren, Kazami Ranki, Jyuubei and Tenma Haru, alongside inspiration from the traditions and work of Osada Eikichi, Yukimura Ryū, Akechi Denki, Nureki Chimuo and Seiu Ito.
But rope is only one part of Lola’s creative language.
A philosopher, filmmaker, artist and creative director, Lola’s work explores perception, human experience, expression and the relationship between ideas and form.
A background in electronic music as a DJ and producer brings rhythm, composition, tension, repetition, silence and improvisation.
More than thirty years of yoga practice and teaching contribute an understanding of anatomy, movement, breath, body awareness and presence.
These disciplines converge in Tiger Nawa Ryū.
Physics and body mechanics provide foundations.
Japanese Kinbaku provides history and vocabulary.
Philosophy asks why.
Art and filmmaking inform composition and perception.
Music brings rhythm and flow.
Yoga brings awareness of body, breath and presence.
Together they form an approach to rope as technique, structure, communication, human experience and art.
INFLUENCES AND CONTEXT
This course is informed by Lola’s long-term study of Japanese Kinbaku and by research into historical and contemporary approaches to Seme Nawa.
These influences are interpreted through the teaching philosophy and creative language of Tiger Nawa Ryū.
The course is not presented as a reproduction of one master’s rope or as the authorised transmission of a single lineage.
It is Lola’s own synthesis of technique, relational practice, artistic research and lived experience.
WHO CAN ATTEND?
This is a Level 3 course.
Completion of Tiger Nawa Ryū Levels 1 and 2 is recommended.
Equivalent experience acquired elsewhere is welcome. Participants should arrive with confident foundational rope handling, consistent tension control, clean construction and the ability to remain connected without continually stopping to correct their rope.
Students should also understand consent, communication, relevant body awareness and fundamental rope safety.
The course is practised in pairs.
Please attend with someone with whom you already have sufficient trust and communication to explore negotiated pressure, restriction and consensual pain.
Please contact Ropejam Studio before booking if you are uncertain whether your current experience or partnership is suitable.
CONSENT AND SAFETY
Level 3 is entirely floor-based.
No partial or full suspension is taught or required.
Seme Nawa contains physical and emotional intensity. Clear negotiation, stop signals, body checks, ongoing consent and controlled release are integrated throughout the weekend.
All challenge remains negotiated, reversible and responsive.
Consent to one form or degree of pain does not imply consent to another.
No participant is expected to endure pain, emotional exposure or restriction beyond their boundaries.
Every exercise can be adjusted or declined in response to mobility, pain, previous injuries, psychological state, body shape and individual limits.
LIMITED CAPACITY
The course is limited to eight duos.
Keeping the group intentionally small allows every pair sufficient space, individual guidance and direct feedback while exploring demanding relational material.
Early booking is recommended.
