Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife, X1A 2R3
Description
Come visit Yellowknife, home of the Aurora, Canada's wildest lightshow, and capture beautiful imagery on your camera at select locations in and around the Yellowknife Area.
When – 24th to 25th March (afternoons and evenings).
Where – Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
What – Two-night aurora workshop exploring the area around Yellowknife.
Numbers – participant availability is max. 6 places (meaning lots of one on one guidance).
Cost - $795.00.
Includes – two afternoon information sessions on night photography and how to use manual camera settings, discuss the upcoming evening events and ask any questions. This will help develop skills for the two nights of photography at various locations around Yellowknife. Caters for all levels of experience in photography. A group dinner will be scheduled on the second evening (optional – based on requests).
Photo locations will be selected based on proximity to Yellowknife, weather conditions, and potential for aurora viewing (locations will be remote and safety gear and briefings will be held prior to starting).
Does not include – travel to and from Yellowknife, car rental and travel to and from workshop locations, accommodation and meals. Car pooling will be recommended and booking of accommodation/car rental should be completed as quick as possible as it is a busy time of year with aurora tourism.
Items to bring:
- Camera and tripod (recommend familiarity with both before attending workshop).
- Recommend a DSLR camera that you can use in Manual settings (for adjusting settings such as ISO, shutter speed, aperture and other specific settings, as required).
- Comfy clothing that will keep you warm (temperatures may be as low as -30 degrees at night, perhaps -40 degrees with the windchill. Safety will be the priority and locations may become dependent on temperature and closeness to town).
- Warm jacket and water proof pant (fleece lined if possible).
- Warm winter boots (capable of walking in ankle deep snow - snowshoes may be available to break trail dependent on locations).
- Warm hat, scarf/buff, or ear muffs.
- Warm gloves – recommend to bring two layers, an inner thin layer for playing with the camera settings, and a warmer waterproof outer layer, such as mitts, for warmth during the night.
- Remote shutter release or similar, as some shots we will be in front of the camera.
- Head lamps (bring two, one white and one red, or a multi lamp if you have one).
- Toe/hand warmers (though these will also be available at the main truck along with a safety kit).
- Flasks for hot chocolate/tea/coffee (this will be provided but if want to keep some it is worth bringing this with you for the night shoot).
Itinerary – A email will be sent with details of the trip 1 - 2 weeks in advance of the workshop. An updated itinerary will be provided at the start of the night workshop (if weather or conditions change).

If this happens, then all deposits/monies will be refunded to the participants, though no compensation would be available for unrelated costs to the workshop (such as flights or hotels).
By purchasing a place on the workshop, you are acknowledging that you accept these conditions.
About Rory – Rory’s passion for photography started many years ago while exploring the scenic landscapes of Ireland before moving to Canada for work in 2006. Since then, Rory has worked all over Canada, photographing unique and remote landscapes, that few people have been too. Rory’s focus is capturing and documenting the natural landscape and the cultural history of Northern Canada, and he has specialized in aurora photography and aurora landscapes for many years and looks forward to passing his experience along.
