Boccaccio's Decameron - Ensemble Pampinea
Fri 15 Nov 2024 7:30 PM - 9:45 PM
Gerrans Memorial Hall, TR2 5EE
Description
An early music concert of music and words from Florence in the 14th century, around Boccaccio’s masterpiece group of stories “The Decameron”. Winners of the London International Early Music Prize, the Swiss based “Pampinea Ensemble” will perform music by Francesco Landini and Andrea da Firenze with recorder, pipe and tabor, organetto and fiddle music.
We will travel to 14th-century Florence, when the Black Death plague was ravaging Europe. In Boccacio’s Decameron, Pampinea, the protagonist, seeks refuge in a secluded villa on the outskirts of Florence with nine friends. When the sun is high, there is no better way to pass the time than in the shade of a blossoming garden, telling stories... During the ten days of quarantine they assemble a hundred stories that range from erotic to tragic, and each imparts a lesson to the audience. The variety of stories will be reflected in the Florentine music that will be performed with recorder, pipe and tabor, organetto and fiddle.
The Decameron is widely accepted as up with Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (which is influenced) as one of the great works of medieval literature and it provides a window onto life in the 14th century in all its glory and guts.
