On Sunday 3 September 1944, shortly before 8pm, the British Second Army, led by a Welsh Guards’ tank squadron, entered Brussels via Avenue de Tervueren. They successfully engaged the enemy near Parc du Cinquantenaire and Avenue des Arts. On 4 September, the 1st Infantry Brigade of the Free Belgian Forces, known as the Brigade Piron after its commander, joined forces with the Guards Armoured Division to complete the city's liberation, amid scenes of huge jubilation.
