A reception to launch the publication of Archaeology 2035: Reflections on where we are and where we want to be.

The Royal Irish Academy has a long history of involvement in archaeology in Ireland and of facilitating highly influential fora and reviews of the profession, an example being Archaeology in Ireland: A Vision for the Future in 2006, initiated by the then President, Professor James A. Slevin.

In 2015 the President and Council of the Academy approved the RIA Standing Committee for Archaeology’s plan to assess the current state and future needs of archaeology on the island of Ireland. Social, economic and technological shifts prompted that strategic initiative, mapping out a sustainable future for the management, resourcing and promotion of archaeology in Ireland. An extensive consultation process led to the publication in 2017 of Archaeology 2025: Strategic Pathways for Archaeology in Ireland.

In anticipation of 2025 a series of events were planned, under the umbrella ‘Archaeology 2025 in 2025’, to examine what had been achieved under the Archaeology 2025 core recommendations and to envisage what was needed by 2035. Contributions were invited from an expert under each of the priority pillars. Those contributions were informed by distinct but iterative events – online meetings with members of the SCA a public workshop in January, leading to a public conference in February, both held at Academy House; and finally this published report.

We are delighted to launch Archaeology 2035: Reflections on where we are and where we want to be, following the biennial Revealing the past conference, with a reception in the Members' Room of the Royal Irish Academy.
