Panel discussion, following the publication of the EASAC Meat alternatives report, on the opportunities and challenges surrounding meat alternatives in the European context.
As the urgency of the climate crisis grows, innovative protein sources and meat alternatives are increasingly positioned as potential solutions to reduce the environmental and ethical burdens of conventional meat production. From plant-based products to insect proteins, microbial fermentation, precision fermentation, and cultivated meat, the spectrum of alternatives raises critical questions about sustainability, nutrition, consumer acceptance, and regulatory oversight.
This panel will bring together experts from science, industry, policy, and civil society to discuss the opportunities and challenges surrounding meat alternatives in the European context informed by the recent evidence review report Meat Alternatives conducted by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC). Drawing on this, the conversation will address:
- Comparative environmental, health, and ethical impacts of emerging protein sources.
- Consumer attitudes, acceptance drivers, and barriers such as taste, affordability, and trust.
- Technological and economic hurdles to scalability, cost-effectiveness, and responsible innovation.
- ,The role of regulation, transparency, and labelling in ensuring safety, sustainability, and consumer empowerment.
- Societal implications for farmers, rural communities, and cultural food practices.
By exploring these dimensions, the panel aims to foster dialogue and debate on the potential environmental, health and ethical benefits and challenges arising from the use of meat alternatives (and alternative proteins) and their future sustainability, affordability, and accessibility.
The event will end at 17:00 and will be followed by a wine reception.
