This Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA) workshop is aimed at those pursuing, or planning to pursue, doctoral research relating to the Environmental Humanities and at postdoctoral or early career researchers working in this space. It seeks to build community among early career researchers and to facilitate discussion of the challenges and opportunities of research in the Environmental Humanities.

The workshop will consist of a networking event and a panel discussion chaired by IHA working group co-chairs Associate Professor Marc Caball (UCD) and Dr Leah O’Hearn (MU).

Networking event:

Participants will be invited on the day to join one of six tables, where one of the following questions will be discussed.

  • What draws you into environmental humanities? What environmental aspects are there, or could there be, in your own work?
  • Hope in Dark Times? How to keep spaces for hope in a time of precarity and poly-crises?
  • What are some shared methodologies across the various disciplines within the environmental humanities? (for example, do you do place-based research? do you have sources? what does your practice look like?)
  • How can/do early career researchers develop their teaching profile by applying their research to pedagogy?
  • How can artistic practice expand or challenge dominant narratives about the climate crisis and ecological change?
  • Where are the environmental humanities going in terms of policy impact?

A reprise of these discussions will then be presented to the rest of the participants by rapporteurs allocated to each table.

Panel discussion

  • Michael Cronin (TCD)
  • Maureen O'Connor (UCC)

Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to raise questions, ideas and discussion points. A refreshment break will provide further time to meet others working in this field.
