Hong Kong's self-reinventing cinema

Lunchtime lecture with Professor Chris Berry and Pat To Yan, moderated by Tara Brady, in collaboration with the East Asian Film Festival (EAFFI). 

This talk will address how the so-called Hong Kong New Wave Cinema marks the first generation of Hong Kong filmmakers trained in film schools, both in Hong Kong and overseas, rather than in the local studios as apprentices. The Hong Kong New Wave of directors encountered art film and they brought back to Hong Kong, diversifying filmmaking and taking global engagement in a new direction.

EAFFI will present a series of classic Hong Kong films as part of the annual East Asia Film festival from 19th to 22nd March at the Irish Film Institute.

Chris Berry (裴开瑞) is Professor of Film Studies at King’s College London. In the 1980s, he worked for China Film Export and Import Corporation (中国电影输出输入公司) in Beijing. His academic research is grounded in work on audio-visual media of the Sinosphere. Books written and/or edited include: Cinema and the National: China on Screen; Postsocialist Cinema in Post-Mao China: the Cultural Revolution after the Cultural Revolution; Film and the Chinese Medical Humanities; Chinese Film Festivals: Sites of Translation; Routledge Handbook of East Asian Popular Culture; Public Space, Media Space; The New Chinese Documentary Film Movement: For the Public Record; and Electronic Elsewheres: Media, Technology, and Social Space. He has served on juries for film festivals including: Bangkok Film Festival; Singapore International Film Festival; Hawai’i International Film Festival; Pusan International Film Festival; and the Golden Horse Awards (Taipei).

Pat To Yan is active in Hong Kong and German Theatre. He is a playwright, director,  and educator, and Artistic Director of Reframe Theatre. House Author of Germany Nationaltheater Mannheim (2021-2022). Former Acting Principal of HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, Lecturer of Drama School of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Elected Council Member and the Chairman of the committee of Literary Art of Hong Kong Arts Development Council (2019-2022).

Tara Brady is a filmmaker and film critic with the Irish Times. She is a regular contributor to RTE's Arena programme and has worked as a critic for BBC World Service. She lectures in film at Trinity College Dublin. Her short films have screened at Belfast Film Festival and IndieCork.
