A lunchtime talk and tour led by the curator of the Royal Irish Academy’s Ink & Innovation exhibition showcasing the Library’s oldest printed materials for the first time.
About the event
Ink & Innovation is a new exhibition showcasing the Royal Irish Academy's oldest printed material together for the first time. Dr Alison Ray will present on the hidden histories of this collection dating to the fifteenth century, exploring the continental book trade and printing press technologies of the early Renaissance. Containing a range of works from history to astronomy, these books reflect the wide interests of readers and their desire to gain an understanding of their surrounding world and beyond. Readers further left behind signs of use in their books, including a fantastic array of written marginalia and notes of ownership from contemporary scientists to eighteenth-century Irish households. This talk will be followed by a guided tour of the display.
About the speaker
Dr Alison Ray is the Collections & Archives Manger of the Royal Irish Academy. She gained her PhD in Medieval History from University College London and her academic research specialises in the history of the pre-modern book
