The protection of human rights is a central component of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. Whatever decision people make about the constitutional future of this island they should, at minimum, expect similar standards and treatment.

The rationale for the inclusion of human rights as a helpful frame of reference for any people-centred discussion of a shared island remains compelling. As does a recognition that relatively successful, stable and secure societies are underpinned by rights-based guarantees. This message has a powerful contemporary resonance in our increasingly conflict-ridden world.

The differences between promises and realities can be stark. Recent attempts to undermine the European Convention on Human Rights are also causing renewed concern. The absence of a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland and Charter of Rights for the island is a useful reminder of unfinished business.

This ARINS in conversation event provides an opportunity for reflection on progress thus far, on current challenges and on what the future of the island might entail regarding human rights.
