Part of Artober at Royal William Yard – a month-long celebration of art, artists and creativity.
This October, Royal William Yard is celebrating all things creative with Artober – bringing together artists, exhibitions, workshops and opportunities to get involved with art in all its forms.
And this year, we’re inviting you to become one of the artists.
Introducing RWY Paint Out – a day dedicated to capturing the extraordinary architecture, landscapes and waterfront views of Royal William Yard.
Inspired by the tradition of plein air painting – creating art out in the open air and directly from the landscape around you – RWY Paint Out invites artists, painters, illustrators and sketchers to find their view of the Yard and turn it into an original piece of art.
From historic architecture and imposing listed buildings to boats on the water, harbour views, green spaces and the surrounding landscape, inspiration can be found around almost every corner.
A number of designated Paint Out locations will be available across Royal William Yard. Choose the view that inspires you, set up your kit and spend the day creating your own interpretation of this unique Plymouth setting.
How it works
Turn up with a blank canvas or surface and your art kit, register with the RWY team on the Green, then head out to your chosen Paint Out location.
From 11am until 3pm, the Yard is your studio.
Paint, draw, sketch or illustrate – the medium is entirely up to you. Oils, acrylics, watercolour, pastels, pencils, ink and mixed media are all welcome.
Your finished artwork should be no larger than 16 x 20 inches (approximately 40 x 50cm).
To qualify for judging, your artwork must be started and completed at Royal William Yard during the Paint Out on the day.
From Paint Out to exhibition
At 3pm, brushes and pencils go down and artists will be asked to bring their completed work to the designated location in the Melville Building, ready for judging at 4pm.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning artworks – but the story doesn’t end there.
The top five pieces will be selected to feature in the RWY Artober Exhibition from 23 October–1 November, giving five Paint Out artists the opportunity to see their work displayed as part of Royal William Yard’s celebration of art.
So, whether you’re an experienced artist or simply love to paint and draw, pack your kit, find a view that inspires you and join us for a day of creativity at the Yard.

What will you create?
On the day
Registration will take place on the Green before the Paint Out begins.
Please arrive with a blank canvas or surface and everything you need to create your artwork, including your own art materials, easel, table, chair or other equipment where required.
Artists will have from 11am until 3pm to complete their work.
To qualify for judging, all artwork must be started and completed during the event on the day.
At 3pm, artists will be asked to bring their finished work to the designated location in the Melville Building, ready for judging at 4pm.
Prizes will be awarded, with the top five artworks also selected to feature in the RWY Artober Exhibition from 23 October–1 November.
The list of designated Paint Out locations will be sent to registered artists ahead of the event.

Wet weather
The event will take place if rain is forecast, so please dress and prepare appropriately for the conditions.
In the event of heavy rain or high winds, the Paint Out will be rescheduled to Saturday 10 October. Ticket holders will be contacted if the reserve date is required.
