Talk: 1605 and All That: The Gunpowder Plot and King James 

'Remember, remember...' If people remember anything of King James VI & I, it is surely that he was the target of the foiled Gunpowder Plot of November 1605.

In this talk, Dr Alexander Courtney sets the Gunpowder Plot in the context of religious divisions, king killing, and political commemoration in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Set in this wider frame, the Powder Treason reveals much about challenges faced by Great Britain's first king, and his skill and ruthlessness in navigating them.

Alexander Courtney is a Fellow of both the Institute of Historical Research and the Royal Historical Society, and he teaches at The Perse School in Cambridge. He is the author of James VI, Britannic Prince and co-edited James VI and I: Kingship, Government and Religion.
