WORKSHOP FORMAT

This full-day practical workshop will explore how a director turns a written scene into compelling film and television drama. Working with actors and short scripts, participants will investigate objectives, subtext, beats, power shifts and the choices that make a scene come alive on screen. We will look at blocking as more than movement: how shapes, lines, levels, distance and composition guide the audience’s eye and reveal relationships.

Participants will also explore working with the camera, understanding how shot size, camera position and lens choice affect performance, presence and the audience’s experience. We will look at how actors can adjust their performance for different framings, how to maintain clear eyelines and continuity, and how a scene is covered for the edit. We will also consider how location, props, sound, silence, genre and visual style can transform the meaning of the same scene. Through practical exercises, demonstrations, discussion and acting from scripts, participants will gain a clearer understanding of the screen actor’s contribution to the complete visual language of a scene, working with Peter Webber.

Participants who have written their own film or television scenes are also welcome to bring them along. Depending on the number of submissions and the practical requirements of the day, there may be an opportunity to work on selected scenes during the workshop. If you would like to be considered, please bring a short scene suitable for practical exploration with actors.

Upon request, you have the option to receive your footage after the session for no extra cost!
