Net Zero: why the cure is worse than the climate change disease
Tue 28 Jan 2025 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The Sekforde, EC1R 0HA
Description
Successive governments have become obsessed with achieving Net Zero: reducing our CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050. This strategy for fighting climate change is classified as a 'mitigation strategy' in the parlance of the IPCC.
The alternative strategy is adaptation, taking measures to adjust to climate change such as building flood defences and irrigation systems, and developing new strains of crops to cope better with changing weather patterns.
Most spending effort in the West is geared towards mitigation, but what if the Net Zero cure is worse than the disease? What if mitigation is actually less effective than adaptation?
Join us for Sacred Cows' fourth talk where our speaker David Turver will discuss some of the wild claims being made in support of Net Zero such as 'cheap' renewables, subsidies for fossil fuels, the scale of the storage problem, the promise of green jobs and more.
David is the author of the the Eigen Values substack, which has gained thousands of subscribers since its launch in January 2023 for its fundamental analysis of energy policy and Net Zero. You can see him speak on the Daily Sceptic podcast here. He is a retired consultant, CIO and project management professional. As an introduction he writes:
"My engineering degree has endowed me with the ability to break problems down and work out solutions from first principles. I grew tired of superficial media commentary that was mostly republishing press releases without critical analysis. I became an accidental energy analyst after realising that government plans for Net Zero were simply undeliverable, so I started a Substack to write about it."
The talk will take place in the upstairs room of the Sekforde pub in Clerkenwell, London. Doors to the upstairs room will open at 6:30 and the talk will start at 7, will last for roughly 40 minutes and will be followed by questions after a short break. Then for those who want to stay, more drinks and discussion in the pub. For those who can't make it in person, it will be recorded and then posted on YouTube.
Sacred Cows is a talks series in London dedicated to investigating the evidence behind contemporary ideas that can often seem immune from criticism.
