Online Watch Party for the Yucahu Short Film

It is with gratitude that I share with you that El Museo del Barrio and I collaborated to create an education video art piece titled "Yucahu: Remembering Our Taino Spirituality." Our intention is to highlight Yucahu, the supreme entity of Taino spirituality, and how we ritualize our connection and understanding of this cemí. The museum's archaeological Taino collection features a ceremonial three-pointed cemí carved in stone that was the inspiration behind this collaboration.
In “Yucahu Remembering Our Taino Spirituality,” wisdom and traditions that have only been passed mouth to ear — an essential method of our Taino spirituality – are shared with you as another piece of our reclamation puzzle. The movement that advocates Taino survival has gained strength. A big part of this effort is focused on searching for information to remind us of the culture of our Aboriginal ancestors and integrate it as part of who we are today. We have created this performance art piece to nourish the collective desire from generations old and new to know, learn, and understand more of our indigenous and ancestral ways and how we can apply them to our lives and lifestyles today. Come and join us for our heartwarming watch party, where you can be part of the experience of watching this video with your Taino and indigenous siblings.
As a special treat, I will host a Talkback after the show with Kasike Jorge Estevez of Higuayagua where the conversation will center around the impermanence of our current understanding of Taino spirituality and the necessity of remaining flexible to changes as new linguistic research emerges. It is set to be a rich conversation, and I look forward to having you join us in the exchange.
We will see you on Tuesday, October 10th, from 5:30pm — 6:30pm PT / 8:30pm — 9:30pm ET.*
Many Blessings,
Akutu Irka
