SAFER Birth Foundational Training
This training is for individual professionals booking and paying for themselves. If you are booking on behalf of an organisation or for multiple staff members, please contact hello@saferbirthproject.co.uk for group and organisational rates.
Most maternity professionals will care for survivors of sexual trauma every single week. At least one in four women has experienced sexual abuse or assault. Most will never disclose. Many will be triggered during routine care without anyone recognising what is happening.
This two-day foundational training gives you the knowledge, language, and practical tools to change that. You will learn how trauma lives in the body and resurfaces during maternity care, why pregnancy and birth are not emotionally neutral for survivors, what triggers look like in labour and birth, how trauma responses are routinely misread as non-compliance, and how communication, consent, and language can either restore safety or remove it.
The training is built around the S.A.F.E.R. model and covers eight modules across both days, including understanding sexual trauma, trauma and the body, pregnancy after sexual trauma, labour and birth triggers, trauma responses during birth, communication and consent, practical trauma-informed care, and reflection and integration.
Who this is for: midwives, obstetricians, doulas, health visitors, perinatal mental health professionals, maternity support workers, and anyone working directly with women and people during pregnancy, birth, or the postnatal period. No previous specialist training in trauma is required.
Taught by Michaela Kalusova, founder of the SAFER Birth Project, with 14 years of experience as a doula, a Masters in Psychology, and advanced practitioner training in supporting survivors during birth.
This training provides education, recognition skills, and communication tools. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or a replacement for safeguarding or clinical governance.
