SAFER Birth Project - Advanced Clinical Skills Training
For those who have completed the SAFER Birth Foundational training
This training is for individual professionals booking and paying for themselves. If you are booking on behalf of an organisation or for multiple staff members, please contact hello@saferbirthproject.co.uk for group and organisational rates.
Recognising trauma is one thing. Knowing what to do in the room, as it is happening, is another. This is the training for professionals who already understand why survivors are at risk during maternity care, and who now want the clinical skills to respond well when a trauma response surfaces mid appointment, mid examination, or mid labour.
This two-day advanced training builds directly on the SAFER Birth Foundational course. It moves from awareness into practice, giving you practical strategies for the hardest moments: identifying and responding to perinatal triggers, managing trauma responses during labour, handling vaginal examinations, procedures and consent, communicating under pressure, and supporting survivors through medical interventions without removing their sense of control.
The training is scenario-based and discussion-led, built around real case studies and small-group work rather than lecture. It covers ten modules across both days, including integrating trauma-informed care into clinical practice, identifying and responding to perinatal triggers, managing trauma responses during labour, vaginal examinations and consent, communication in high-pressure situations, supporting survivors during medical interventions, case study workshops, implementing trauma-informed care in teams and systems, practitioner reflection and boundaries, and integration and action planning.
Who this is for: professionals who work with the same women or birthing people over time, where a relationship and trust have been built and there is continuity of care, such as midwives in continuity roles, doulas, health visitors, perinatal mental health professionals, and maternity support workers. It is designed for those who have completed the SAFER Birth Foundational training and want to deepen their clinical skills. The Foundational training is a prerequisite for this course. Places are open only to those who have completed it, because the advanced work assumes the knowledge, language, and trigger mapping built there, and because responding well in the moment depends on the trust and relationship you already hold with the woman.
Taught by Michaela Kalusova, founder of the SAFER Birth Project, with 14 years of experience as a doula, a Masters in Psychology, and advanced practitioner training in supporting survivors during birth.
This training provides education, recognition skills, and communication tools. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or a replacement for safeguarding or clinical governance.
