Lunchtime concert with the Slate Quartet
Wed 15 May 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM BST
33 Hampstead Lane, N6 4RT
Description
This is the first in a series of concerts run in conjunction with the Philharmonia Orchestra's MMSF Instrumental Fellowship Programme. Each concert will feature a young musician starting out on their orchestral career - and we are delighted that our first musician is:
Viola player Carys Barnes with her Slate Quartet.
Carys is currently studying a Masters in Advanced Instrumental Studies at the Guidhall School of Music and Drama. She is also on trial for Principal viola with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and has been offered the position of Principal viola with the Slovak State Sinfonietta.
The other members of her quartet are:
Tiago Soares Silva (violin) - a current Southbank Centre Future Artist
Jenny Clare (violin) - in her final year at the Royal Academy of Music
Oonah Lowther (cello) - working with the Young Artists Scheme with the Southbank Centre Future Artists
PROGRAMME
Joseph Haydn - String Quartet in C Major, Op. 20 No. 2
Imogen Holst - Phantasy String Quartet
Ludwig van Beethoven - String Quartet Op.18 No. 4

A glass of wine and soft drinks will be available before the performance. Included in the price of your ticket.
THE SLATE QUARTET:
Formed in 2022, the Slate Quartet performs a variety of repertoire, from classical to
contemporary and have a particular interest in finding a theme or idea that draws the programme together.
They performed at the Philharmonia’s Let Freedom
Ring Insight day at the Royal Festival Hall and collaborated with the award-winning composer Brett Dean to perform his
‘Eclipse’ Quartet at the Royal Academy of Music. As only the second interpreters of Dean’s work they are thrilled
to be guided by him on the upcoming recording of the work.
Slate Quartet take pride in championing lesser-known and modern works, actively
programming composers from diverse backgrounds and rarely performed works - and collaborating with other artists both
musical and not. In January 2023 they curated a concert at the Student Create festival alongside a graphic designer from Central
Saint Martins which paired Phillip
Glass’ String Quartet No.5 and Caroline Shaw’s unpublished Ritornello 2.sq.2.j.a with
graphics created specifically for those pieces.
In the coming months they will be performing at the Petworth Festival, Leicester
Cathedral, Felixstowe Music Festival and in the South of France as part of a residency
with Ferrandou Musique.
