THE ARTISTS:

Madeleine Mitchell
has been described by The Times as ‘one of Britain's liveliest musical forces (and) foremost violinists'. Her performances in some 50 countries as soloist and chamber musician in a wide repertoire are frequently broadcast for television and radio. When she won the Palma d’Oro her playing was praised both for her vibrant lyrical intensity and pioneering creativity. In 2022 she won a Royal Philharmonic Society Enterprise Award for her creative project linking art and music in film.

Madeleine has represented the UK in recitals across the world and in 2024 she has been invited to perform in Japan. Her Century of Music by British Women composers, including her commission of a new piece by Errollyn Wallen, went out as a highly successful livestream at St John's Smith Square on International Women’s Day. Other recent successes include an album of Grace Williams Chamber Music, all premiere recordings, with her London Chamber Ensemble - Guardian CD of the Week and no. 2 in the Classical Charts.

Richard Crabtree
is professor of viola and violin at Trinity Laban and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Richard studied violin and viola with Nicholas Roth at Trinity College of Music and went on to work with a number of major orchestras as a principle violaist and as a soloit. His keen interest in promoting contemporary music has taken him throughout the UK, Europe and Asia including a major tour of Turkmenistan where he had the distinction of being the first British musician to perform there since glasnost.

He has recorded solo soundtracks for television documentaries and for BBC Radio 3, 4, and Classic FM and recently performed the Salzedo Viola Concerto in London for the centenary of the composer.

Richard has also produced the Crabbers Scale Manual for Violin, Viola and Cello - a unique system uses that letters and numbers and is specifically designed to help students of all ages and abilities to gain confidence when learning scales.
