Burnham Ferry to Wild Wallasea

Begin with one of the Festival’s most memorable journeys—a scenic ferry crossing from Burnham’s historic quayside across the River Crouch to Wallasea Island. From the landing at Essex Marina, follow the riverside coast path into the remarkable RSPB nature reserve, where an RSPB guide will explain how former farmland was transformed using three million tonnes of soil excavated during construction of London’s Elizabeth line. The resulting mosaic of saltmarsh, mudflats, lagoons and coastal grassland has become a magnificent haven for wildlife.

Look out for waders and wildfowl, hunting Marsh Harriers, Brown Hares and perhaps even a Common Seal. With its wide skies, open water and ever-changing estuary, this is a wonderfully atmospheric walk. Both ferry crossings are included in the Festival ticket price.

Route information

Accessibility of route – There are no stiles on RSPB land. Walkers must be able to board and leave the passenger ferry. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Start and finish – Town Steps pontoon, Town Quay, Burnham-on-Crouch, CM0 8AT, near the Anchor Hotel.

Toilets – An accessible toilet is available at RSPB Wallasea Island.
Refreshments – No lunch or refreshments are included. Please bring your own drinks and snacks.

Ferry crossings – The outward and return crossings between Burnham and Wallasea Island are included in the Festival.

Surface – Riverside coast path and unsurfaced nature-reserve trails.

Public transport – Burnham-on-Crouch is served by local buses and trains. The nearest bus stop is Clock Tower, a short walk from Town Quay; Burnham-on-Crouch railway station is approximately 0.7 miles away. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.
