Step back into the story of First World War aviation on this wonderfully varied circular walk from Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome & Museum, the largest surviving First World War aerodrome in Europe. Follow peaceful bridleways and country footpaths, including part of the former Maldon to Woodham Ferrers railway, and pass vineyards and the historic village church, where several young airmen are buried. On returning, enjoy a special sampler of the Grade II* listed aerodrome, with an introduction to its fascinating history and time to explore a selection of its museum exhibitions, followed by an included cream tea in the Officers' Mess.

Accessibility of route – Several stiles, steps and some short, steep slopes. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

– Public footpaths, bridleways and a section of disused railway.

Parking – On-site parking is available at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Please follow the signs and any directions given by the Festival team; allow sufficient time to park before the walk begins. 

Public transport – Stow Maries is served by limited rural bus services. The nearest bus stop is Garage, Stow Maries, but the aerodrome is not within a convenient walking distance. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.
