Purleigh: Lawrence Washington and the American Story

Explore much of the historic parish of Purleigh, with beautiful countryside and far-reaching views from this picturesque hilltop village. Lawrence Washington - George Washington’s great-great-grandfather - became Rector of Purleigh in 1633, making the surrounding parish and its people his responsibility. As you follow village lanes, wooded tracks and field paths, your walk leader will reveal the surprising story of Washington’s time here and explain how this quiet corner of Essex became connected with the first President of the United States. Commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence, this special walk also offers plenty of other discoveries, including Purleigh’s medieval castle mound, ancient common land, traces of its lost railway and vineyards stretching across the slopes.

Accessibility of route – The route includes steps and two stiles. There are also several hills. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Public transport – Purleigh is served by limited rural bus services. The nearest bus stop is Purleigh Village Hall, a short walk from the Playing Fields. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.

Lunch – There will be a 40–45 minute stop at Purleigh Community Store. Walkers who select the lunch option when booking will be required to pre-order their meal. A ploughman’s lunch with a beer or glass of wine will be available for £10 per person. It includes a sausage roll, cheese and ham, salad, French stick, pork pies and pickles. The vegetarian option is a goat’s cheese and caramelised onion quiche with salad. Pre-orders may be cancelled up to 24 hours before the walk. Lunch is not included in the Festival ticket price and must be paid for.

Church visit – All Saints Church will be closed due to essential repairs. The talk about Lawrence Washington and the church will therefore take place outside in the churchyard.
