Mundon’s Lost Church and Petrified Oaks

Discover one of the Dengie’s most atmospheric landscapes on this varied circular walk through the quiet countryside around Mundon. Following country lanes, field paths and a long stretch of seawall, the route offers fine views across Mundon Creek towards Maylandsea Marina. The remarkable “petrified” oaks provide an unforgettable sight: these ancient, weather-beaten trees are not truly fossilised but were probably killed by saltwater flooding. Hear the legends surrounding them, including tales of the Spanish Armada and their reputed influence on H. G. Wells. The walk also visits the isolated St Mary’s Church, rescued from dereliction and beautifully restored, with its timber Tudor tower, Georgian box pews and remarkable painted interior. The return passes the Mundon Furze, one of the Dengie Peninsula’s last surviving areas of ancient woodland. Afterwards, there is the option of lunch at the historic White Horse.

Route Length Category - Medium

Accessibility of route – The route includes three stiles and some steps/slopes. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Start and finish – The White Horse PH car park, Main Road, Mundon, CM9 6PB. If not staying for lunch afterwards, please park on the road in the village in a suitable place.

Toilets – Available at the White Horse before and after the walk.

Public transport – Mundon is served by local bus services. The nearest bus stop is Victory Hall, a very short walk from the White Horse. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.

Lunch – There is the option of lunch at the White Horse after the walk. Walkers who indicate that they would like lunch will be sent the menu by email before the event. Please review the menu in advance, as meal choices will be collected and pre-orders placed before the walk begins. Lunch and refreshments are not included in the Festival ticket price and must be paid for separately by walkers.
