Discover some of the Saltmarsh Coast’s most fascinating waterside landmarks on this varied full day walk. At Beeleigh Falls, see the remarkable meeting place of four waterways, surrounded by historic locks, weirs and floodgates. The outstanding highlight is a rare one-hour guided tour of Beeleigh Steam Mill, offering a closer look at this important survivor from Essex’s industrial past. Other points of interest include Beeleigh Falls House, historic Beeleigh Abbey and the peaceful Leech Memorial Garden. In Maldon, enjoy the character of the historic town centre and the maritime atmosphere of the Hythe, where Thames sailing barges line the waterfront. Following an optional lunch at the Queen’s Head or a picnic in Promenade Park, there will be attractive estuary views and a glimpse of the famous Maldon Salt works before returning to Heybridge Basin.

Accessibility of route – The route includes steps leading out of Daisy Meadow Car Park. No stiles. Uneven terrain in places. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Parking – Daisy Meadow Car Park is the starting and finishing point. Please ensure that you pay for sufficient parking time to cover the full duration of the walk.
Toilets – Available at the pubs in Heybridge Basin, Beeleigh Steam Mill, the Queen’s Head in Maldon and Promenade Park.
Public transport – Heybridge Basin is served by local bus services. The nearest bus stop is Heybridge Basin, a short walk from Daisy Meadow Car Park. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.
Lunch – There will be a 60–70-minute optional lunch stop at the Queen’s Head in Maldon. Alternatively, walkers may bring a picnic to enjoy in Promenade Park. Lunch and refreshments are not included in the Festival and must be paid for by walkers. More details for lunch options at the Queens Head will be sent separately.
Circular route – Navigation towpath, river embankments, woodland and grassy paths, town streets, the England Coast Path and seawall.
