Following the Fox to Tillingham

Discover some of the remotest and most atmospheric corners of the Dengie Peninsula on this rewarding circular walk led by the Maldon & Dengie Ramblers. Setting out from Southminster, the route follows peaceful paths and quiet country lanes through the little hamlets of Asheldham and Dengie, surrounded by the peninsula’s characteristic open farmland and wonderfully expansive skies. The walk continues to the attractive village of Tillingham, where there will be an opportunity to pause for an optional lunch at the Fox & Hounds. Refreshed, you will leave Tillingham along a substantial stretch of the long-distance St Peter’s Way, enjoying far-reaching views towards the Blackwater Estuary before following more rural paths back towards Southminster. It promises a splendid day’s walking through one of the most secluded and distinctive landscapes in Essex.

Route Length Category – Long

Accessibility of route – The route includes stiles and steps. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Start and finish – Southminster Railway Station, Station Approach, Southminster, Essex, CM0 7EN.

Parking – The station car park is chargeable. The daily charge is currently £5, but please check the current tariff before travelling and ensure you pay for sufficient time to cover the full walk. Payment can be made through Saba or by telephone on 0330 400 7275, using location code 804035.

Toilets – Fox and Hounds PH

Public transport – The walk starts at Southminster railway station, which is served by Greater Anglia trains. The nearest bus stop is Railway Station, immediately outside. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.
