Burnham-on-Crouch: A Celebration of Sea and Air Heritage

Explore Burnham-on-Crouch’s remarkable connections with adventure on both sea and air during this fascinating circular walk led by the Maldon & Dengie Ramblers. Leaving the historic Clock Tower, the route heads through the countryside east of the town to Dammerwick Farm for a special visit to Rannoch Adventure. Here, discover how locally designed and built ocean rowing boats have carried adventurers across some of the world’s most challenging waters and helped set numerous records. The walk also passes sites associated with Burnham’s former wartime airfields, revealing a less familiar chapter in the town’s aviation history. The return journey includes a beautiful stretch of the King Charles III England Coast Path along the seawall beside the Crouch Estuary. With far-reaching views across the river and surrounding marshes, this wonderfully varied walk brings together Burnham’s maritime innovation, wartime heritage and distinctive coastal landscape.

Accessibility of route – No steps or stiles; uneven terrain. Footpaths could be muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is required.

Parking – Free parking can be found in the High Street, in Providence or at the entrance to Riverside Park, near the library. Please check any signs and restrictions and ensure you allow sufficient time to complete the walk.

Toilets – Public toilets are available on The Quay, close to the starting point. There no toilets on the walk route.

Public transport – Burnham-on-Crouch is served by local buses and trains. The nearest bus stop is Clock Tower, beside the meeting point; the railway station is also within walking distance. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.

Lunch – Although no lunch stop is included in the walk, Burnham-on-Crouch offers plenty of places to enjoy lunch or refreshments afterwards. It is suggested you bring a snack with you (as well as water) on the walk.
