Follow one of the area’s most distinctive landscape features on this wonderfully varied circular walk through the countryside around Stow Maries. The former Maldon West to Woodham Ferrers railway remains clearly visible as a tree-lined ribbon stretching across the surrounding fields, and much of the opening section follows its atmospheric old track. Pass the site of the tiny Stow St Mary Halt and discover why it was built. A special highlight is a private visit to David Holden’s delightful 7¼-inch-gauge Beacon Hill Miniature Railway in Cold Norton. The return crosses attractive farmland and passes the historic Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Enjoy views across the Crouch Valley before returning to the Prince of Wales for an optional homemade lunch.
