Goldhanger to Lauriston: The Blackwater’s Community Farm

Step off the beaten track and discover the hidden gem of Lauriston Farm on this special walk from historic Goldhanger. Enjoy expansive views across the Blackwater Estuary towards Osea Island, with excellent opportunities to spot coastal birdlife along the way. Hear stories of Goldhanger’s smugglers, its oyster-fishing and salt-making heritage, an ingenious former duck decoy and an ancient field preserved within the coastal landscape. The highlight is Lauriston, an inspiring community-owned biodynamic farm where the team works alongside adults with learning disabilities. Discover how its organic vegetables, rare-breed cattle and sheep, hens, woodland and wildlife-rich farmland are cared for. A two-course vegetarian lunch will be prepared by the farm’s own chef, using produce from the farm where possible, although walkers are welcome to bring a packed lunch instead.

Parking – Please park considerately in Head Street or Church Street in the village. Spaces close to the starting point may be limited, so allow extra time and be prepared for a short walk to the meeting point. Please do not use the car park opposite The Chequers, as it is reserved for pub patrons.

Toilets – Available at Lauriston Farm and The Chequers at the end of the walk. No toilets are identified at the starting point.

Public transport – Goldhanger is served by local bus services. The nearest bus stop is Head Street, close to the Village Pump. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.

Lunch – A two-course vegetarian lunch will be prepared by Lauriston Farm’s own chef, using produce grown on the farm where possible. The lunch costs £15 per person and is not included in the Festival. Water is provided with the lunch. Payment should be made by card on the day. Walkers are welcome to bring their own packed lunches; this is definitely recommended for those with food allergies.
