Burnham-on-Crouch: A Walk Through Time

Discover how Burnham-on-Crouch grew from two small medieval settlements into a thriving oyster port, industrial town and internationally renowned sailing centre. Starting at the distinctive Clock Tower, hear about its medieval market and carnival before discovering the independent Rio Cinema, the railway that transformed the town and historic St Mary the Virgin Church. Highlights include Foundry Lane, the modern Yacht Harbour and unusual floating RNLI station. 

Beside the River Crouch, stories of oyster cultivation, Wallasea Island, smugglers and local folklore bring the waterfront vividly to life. See the riverside War Memorial, working docks and boatyards, handsome Georgian Quay and celebrated yacht clubs. This fascinating walk reveals Burnham’s many historical layers and the river that shaped them. After the walk, you may wish to retrace your steps to visit the former boatbuilding premises housing Burnham Museum, usually open on Sundays from 2–5pm.

Parking – Parking can be found in the High Street, Providence or near the entrance to Riverside Park, close to the library. Please check local signs for restrictions and allow sufficient time to find a space and reach the Clock Tower before the walk starts.

Toilets – Public toilets are available in Doctors Lane, just off The Quay and close to the starting point. The route passes nearby again during the walk.

Public transport – Burnham-on-Crouch is served by local buses and trains. The nearest bus stop is Clock Tower, beside the meeting point; the railway station is also within walking distance. Please check suitable services and return times at TravelEssex before travelling.

Lunch – There is no organised lunch stop, but the walk finishes in the town centre at approximately 1:30pm, where there are plenty of places to enjoy lunch or refreshments afterwards.
