Enjoy a rare opportunity to explore one of the Blackwater Estuary’s most secluded places on a guided visit to Northey Island. Beginning beside Maldon’s boating lake, the walk follows the estuary seawall before crossing the tidal causeway to this remote and peaceful island. Here, an expert National Trust guide will introduce its wonderfully rich mixture of wildlife, saltmarsh, mudflats and open grassland. Discover the island’s reputed association with the Battle of Maldon, when an English force confronted Viking invaders in this evocative landscape. You will also learn about the ambitious work being undertaken to protect, restore and create saltmarsh habitat, supporting wildlife while helping the island adapt to rising sea levels. Wide estuary views and the adventurous causeway crossing complete this memorable visit to an island where wildlife, history and legend meet.
