EVENING ENTERTAINMENT - Captain Ann: Heroine, Rebel or Rioter?

Thu 1 Oct 2026 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Osea View Café, Osea Leisure Park, Goldhanger Road, Heybridge, Maldon,, CM9 4SA

Meet Captain Ann Carter, one of Maldon’s boldest and controversial women, in the atmospheric waterfront setting where her extraordinary story began. Against a background of failed harvests, soaring food prices and grain being shipped abroad, Ann rallied the hungry people of Maldon and led raids near Mill Beach in 1629. Was she a courageous campaigner, an early feminist—or a dangerous rioter? Local historian Julie Miller, curator of Maldon’s Combined Military Services Museum and author of a booklet about Captain Ann, brings her vividly to life in contemporary costume. Expect rebellion, injustice, courage and a compelling story with echoes for today.
