Janusz Morgenstern’s rarely-screened, glittery diamond of midcentury Polish cinema. In postwar Gdansk, the cool and carefree Jacek (Zbigniew Cybulski) is a member of an experimental drama troupe. One day, on a bridge overlooking the canal, he encounters Margueritte (Teresa Tuszynska), the arrestingly beautiful daughter of the French consul. Margueritte is foreign, teasing, playful, and unobtainable, and Jacek is utterly enchanted by her. Yet their courtship is clouded by the fact that they are from completely different worlds: she, a wealthy and spoiled daughter of a French diplomat, and he, a moorless artist.

Starring and written by the ‘Polish James Dean’ Zbigniew Cybulski, closely inspired by his own life as a theatre director in Poland, the film is a classic story of boy-meets-girl. But it is also one of the nervous postwar relationships between East and West: Morgenstern’s film was made just at the moment the emergence of the French New Wave movement – the same year as Godard’s Breathless – and, while holding the same youthful energy, loose, lyrical narrative structure, and formal experimentation as its Western neighbours, Goodbye, See You Tomorrow’s narrative of a French-Polish love story also has striking geopolitical undertones.
