Santa Monica High School Theatre presents The Drowsy Chaperone - A Musical Within A Comedy
Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre. It was the darling of the Tony Awards, nominated for 13 and winning the most statues in 2006! It sold out on Broadway! So don’t miss your chance to see this wildly entertaining performance!
This show-within-a-show begins when a die-hard musical fan imagines performers coming to life in his shabby apartment whenever he plays his favorite cast album, a 1928 smash hit called "The Drowsy Chaperone." He narrates the show for us gleefully, filling in the gaps between the tracks of the fictional jazzy musical with hilarious quips and anecdotes. The show is filled with zany characters and even zanier songs/dance numbers featuring a young starlet, her titular chaperone, and her soon-to-be groom along with his best tap-dancing friend. The story builds as gangsters, a lothario, a producer, and a butler all with their wacky agendas set out to either encourage or spoil the wedding. Be immersed in this delightful, uproarious tale with madcap characters and songs that earned it one of 5 Tonys awarded to this show.
