Come on a brick-based, avian adventure into the wonderful world of birds and LEGO®! A hoot for all the family, you’ll have a special opportunity to see some of the resident and visiting birds of Sandwich Bay as they are weighed, measured and ringed under licence (weather permitting). We’ll learn all about the birds of the Bay - their behaviour, habitats, some of the threats they face and what we can do to help - as we take a birdwatching nature walk. Then we'll have a go at creating your own Lapwing figure out of bricks.

Children need nature, and nature needs future generations to take action and save it. Attendance at our Explorer sessions are a wonderful way to create memories shaped by nature that will inspire a lifelong passion for the world around us.

Led by an experienced team of education leaders and conservationists, we are based on the private Sandwich Bay estate and home to Restharrow Scrape, an artificial wetland which acts as a refuge for many birds, as well as woodland, grassland, dunes and beach!

Please be aware:

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult who is able to encourage and help them with the activities.
  • Our session starts at 9am and ends at 12pm so please arrive in good time.
  • Some activities take place outdoors and we recommend appropriate clothing for all weathers (sun cream, hats, water bottle etc.)
  • This event is suitable for those over 5 years old
  • In the event of extreme weather conditons, we may have to adapt our workshops to keep everyone safe. This could include shortening the event duration.

More information:

Cost: £10 per person, which includes bricks to make your own LEGO® Lapwing. Unless you wish to build your own Lapwing figure, accompanying adults are free.

Our Field Centre has a small shop on site, stocking snacks and souvenirs.

Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory lies within the private estate of Sandwich Bay, which operates a toll road. There is a small fee of £1 at the Tollgate for non-members visiting the Observatory. However, you must exit from the same toll booth, otherwise you will be charged £5. Once at the Field Centre, parking is free. If the toll booth operators are absent during the time of your visit, you can pay the £1 charge on your exit

If you or a member of your household are feeling unwell on the day of the event, please do not attend.
