Home-Ed Group: GULL DETECTIVES: A Coastal Wildlife Adventure!

Please note that this event is best suited to Home Educated children aged 6 and over. Our session takes place in areas of uneven terrain and involves a large about of walking, with the terrain being unsuitable for buggies and long distances. It will also involve the use of equipment such as binoculars.

Can you crack the case of the mystery gull?

Calling all young wildlife detectives! Join us at Whitstable Harbour for a fun, hands-on coastal wildlife workshop in partnership with Bird Wise North Kent.

The harbour is home to a fascinating variety of coastal wildlife, and gulls are some of its most familiar- but often misunderstood - residents. With several different species to discover, can you tell who's who?

It's time to grab your detective notebooks, sharpen your observation skills, and investigate!

🔎 What will our young detectives discover?

🐦 Gull ID: Who's Who at the Harbour?
Not all gulls are the same! We'll investigate the clues that help us identify different gull species, looking closely at their size, colour, beaks, legs, wing markings, and behaviour.

🕵️ Become a Wildlife Detective
Using real-life observations, identification clues, and detective-style challenges, children will learn to look more closely at the gulls around them. They'll gather evidence, compare their findings, and work towards solving the mystery of which gull is which.

🌊 Explore Whitstable's Coastal Wildlife
Gulls are just one part of the harbour's wildlife story! We'll discover more about the animals that live along our coastline, how they use the harbour, and why these special places are important for wildlife.

💚 Discover How to Protect Our Coastal Birds
Working alongside Bird Wise North Kent, we'll explore how our actions can help protect coastal birds and their habitats. We'll learn how to enjoy watching wildlife responsibly and why giving birds space is so important.
