Modern Quilting Workshop with Claudia John Shearer - Postmodern Jukebox

Learn how to construct a dynamic curved block using my ruler- and template-free technique and design your own Postmodern Jukebox quilt. This workshop is perfect for quilters who are new to improvisation or anyone looking for a structured, yet creatively open, way to dive into freeform design.

We’ll explore a concept I call flexible patterning—you determine the number, size, and layout of your blocks, working loosely within a g rid to create rhythm and movement. This process allows for spontaneity while maintaining a cohesive structure. I will provide a tutorial on cutting and piecing curves without rulers or templates, plus tips on fabric selection to help you build a vibrant and personal color palette. 

There are no specific fabric requirements, as this is an improvisational process. Bring a variety of fabrics—no less than a quarter yard (WOF) per piece. The sample quilt pictured here used approximately 2 yards of fabric. If you pre-select your color palette, bring extra fabric so you have options to design in the moment.

In addition attendees will need to bring the following:

• Sewing machine
• Basic quilting supplies (thread, scissors, rulers, etc.)
• Rotary cutter (with a new, sharp blade) & cutting mat
• Pins and a fabric marker, such as a Sewline chalk pencil
• Portable design wall. You can make a simple one economically by affixing a piece of batting to a small foam board or bring some batting or flannel and painters tape to improvise a design wall in class.

The Venue

Arab Cultural Center, 2 Plaza St, SF. There is some street parking which is free at weekends but the venue is also TWO minutes walk from Forest Hill Station, and the 44/43 pass right outside.

Claudia Shearer is a San Francisco–based artist, educator, and quilt maker who has been creating quilts for over 20 years.
