Join us for this rescheduled recital as part of our new Song Series in Winchester, showcasing the rising stars of solo vocal performance from around the UK. 

Joe and Tom present a varied programme of songs ranging from the masters of German Lieder to the rich treasures of late Russian romanticism, concluding with lighter music theatre repertoire by Richard Rogers and Victor Young.

Joe Chalmers
Joe Chalmers is a London-based Bass-Baritone from Winchester, Hampshire. Joe’s joy for singing began whilst at the Winchester Cathedral choir school, The Pilgrims' School. He is currently studying on the Master’s course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he will continue his studies on the Opera course in September 2022. He is currently under the tutelage of John Evans, and has previously worked with David Pollard and Amy Williamson, and participated in masterclasses with Sarah Walker CBE, Jonathan Dove, John Fisher, Janis Kelly, Elizabeth Rowe, Alistair Hogarth, Jonathan Lemalu, Kamal Khan and Andrew Watts.

As a freelance singer, Joe enjoys a busy performance career. In Autumn 2021, he took a cover role for the English Nation Opera; notably stepping-in for the final performance, whilst making his Colosseum debut, in the role of Captain Corcoran in HMS Pinafore. Recent operatic performances include Martino (L’occasione fa il Ladro, British Youth Opera), Bass Shepherd and cover Plutone and Caronte (L’orfeo, Garsington Opera), Nettuno (la liberazione di ruggiero, Longborough Festival Opera), Chorus and Waiter (Der Rosenkavalier, Garsington Opera), Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro, Guildhall), Belcore (L’elisir d’amore, Guildhall Scenes), Sid (Albert Herring, Guildhall Scenes) and Escamillo (Carmen, Guildhall Scenes). Other credits include recitals with Debut Ltd., Giles Terera MBE and Jamael Westman, stars of the original West End cast of Hamilton, and many more.

Tom Jesty - Accompanist in Residence & Song Series Co-Artistic Director
Tom is currently studying for a masters in piano accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. At the Guildhall Tom has played in recitals of Spanish song, music from the Great American Songbook, songs by contemporary composer Stephen Hough, and solo and vocal repertoire by Benjamin Britten. Tom is currently working on lesser-known repertoire by Russian composers Nikolai Roslavets and Arthur-Vincent Lourié under the tuition of Iain Burnside, as well as George Crumb’s Apparition, and a programme of German Lieder, for which he will receive coaching from Graham Johnson. Tom is currently studying with Pamela Lidiard.

Tom is a former Head Quirister of Winchester College Chapel Choir and winner of BBC Radio 2 Choirboy of the Year. Prior to moving to London, Tom worked as a piano teacher and accompanist in Winchester, which included accompanying for the Wessex Solo Singers Courses, run by Lynton Atkinson, and the Cratoule Summer Singing School. He also accompanies for the Hampshire Youth Choirs, run by the Hampshire Music Service, and for the City Chamber Choir in London, directed by Stephen Jones. As part of the latter’s concert in March, Tom will perform Gerald Finzi’s Eclogue for piano and strings.
