What happens when story meets steam?

Join storyteller Fleur Shorthouse for an immersive day exploring the art of Sauna Storytelling - weaving traditional oral stories into sauna experiences to create powerful, sensory journeys.

This workshop is perfect for:

• Sauna hosts / practitioners / enthusiasts
• Storytellers curious about working in sauna spaces
• Sauna lovers wanting to deepen the ritual experience

No previous sauna or storytelling experience is needed.

What you'll learn

Through playful exercises and guided practice you will:

• Learn the basics of traditional oral storytelling
• Discover how story can shape a sauna experience
• Experiment with scent, objects and atmosphere to create immersive storytelling
• Build confidence speaking and performing in a sauna setting

By the end of the day you’ll leave with a story ready to tell - whether in the sauna, around a fire, or to friends and family that evening.

The stories

Learn how to connect with your local folklore and traditional stories and how to work with this beautiful material in the sauna. We will practice with Local Sussex Stories of Pharisees, Knuckers and Witch Hares, then cross-reference with your local characters.

The day includes

• Storytelling workshop with expert sauna master and storyteller Fleur
• Sauna experiences across all three sauna spaces
• Practical exercises in storytelling and sauna ritual
• A homemade soup lunch

Some activities take place outdoors, so please bring your sauna kit and clothing for all weathers. A full information email will be sent before the workshop.

About Fleur

Fleur Shorthouse has been telling traditional oral stories for nearly 30 years, specialising in philosophical folktales, Greek myths and fairy tales. She is Artist in Residence at Wild Spa Wowo, developing the emerging practice of Sauna Storytelling, and tells regularly at Stanmer Sauna Garden.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and experienced storytellers. Learning to work with steam and hosting sauna ritual is a skill that will also need to be honed to combine these arts.
