Birute, a highly skilled Lithuanian Bath Master is visiting us to share her knowledge and bring us an insight into the practices of the Baltic sauna rituals.

Using bundles of leafy branches, the tradition of leaf whisking spans the Nordics, Eastern Slavic and Baltic states.

The leaves are used fresh or dried leaves are rehydrated and then used to move steam, bring heat to the body and invigorate and stimulate the skin when used to hit the body. They were the original body scrub - and saponins in birch create a foamy water.

Over time the modernisation of the sauna sidelined these once commonplace practices - there has been a resurgence of interest in these practices in modern times. The Bath Master can use many types of leaves and herbs to deliver full body treatments. It is also a lovely practice to share with your friends and family.
