Wemyss Caves: Then & Now
A guided tour exploring the Wemyss Caves and adjacent coastline, looking at the photographic evidence of change over the past 100+ years.
The Wemyss Caves are famous for the Pictish carvings to be found on their walls which have been there for around 1700 years. SWACS runs tours of the caves on a regular basis, but for this event the guides will be equipped with a selection of early photographs and drawings, some depicting carvings within the caves and others the external environment. Comparing with current conditions, the changes will be noted and the possible reasons for those changes discussed.
Tours will start from the Wemyss Caves Visitor Centre.
Wemyss Caves Visitor Centre, Terras Hall, The Haugh, East Wemyss, KY1 4SB.
The first half of the tour will concentrate on two caves – Court Cave and Doo Cave – that are accessible to users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters who will be very welcome to attend for this part of the tour. The Visitor Centre and its facilities are also accessible.
This event is part of the Beach of Dreams festival.
