The Tour

This tour is expected to take around an hour or so. You will visit the ruins of MacDuff Castle and Jonathan's Cave. The castle was the original seat of the Wemyss family but has seen many changes over the years and Jonathan's Cave is one of the most important caves in terms of its Pictish carvings. Other stops en route will help deepen your knowledge of the site. This tour is more energetic and adventurous in terms of the terrain. There are some 80+ steps to climb and the path is more challenging especially in bad weather.

We also offer a tour of Court Cave and Doo Cave and the full guided tour of the whole site.

We can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can't take anyone who turns up without a booking.

The Museum

You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum, housed in the Visitor Centre. It's best to do so before the tour, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm.

As well as telling the story of the caves, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles.

Toilet facilities are available.

Parking

Please note that there is no on-site parking at our Visitor Centre in The Haugh, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request.

Donations

All tours are given free of charge, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable us to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.
