Fife Doors Open Day 2026

For Fife Doors Open Day we will be setting off in groups from Court Cave, with 20 minutes between each group departing. The tours begin at 1pm and the last chance to join a tour will be at 3pm.

The Wemyss Caves

The caves contain the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere - still in the place they were made over 1,500 years ago.

Located on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle, once home to the Earls of Fife.

The Tour

The tour covers 5,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave, Doo Cave, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan's Cave.

This is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts up to two hours. If you are a user of a wheelchair or mobility scooter, want to avoid steps or would simply prefer a shorter route, then the first two caves will be accessible for you.

The Museum

You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum in the Terras Hall, The Haugh, East Wemyss KY1 4SB. It's best to do so before the tour, and the Museum will be open from 1pm.

As well as telling the story of the caves, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles.

Toilet facilities are available at the museum.

Parking

Please note that there is no on-site parking at our Visitor Centre in The Haugh, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic, and very restricted parking close to the caves at Weavers Court. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street and Back Dykes, from where it is a short walk to the Visitor Centre and caves.

All tours are given free of charge, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable us to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.
